The article analyzes the discussions on the problems of civilizational development in the texts of the period from 1982 to 2011, the authors of which worked at the Institute of Philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Selected texts are being prepared for publication in a special memorial volume of publications within the framework of the “Russian Project for Civilizational Development”. Emphasis is placed on methodological approaches to the understanding of civilization, the boundaries and interrelations of this concept and categories close to it with reference to the works of V.S. Bibler, V.J. Kelle, N.V. Motroshilova, A.P. Ogurtsov, V.S. Stepin. The example of some texts shows the understanding of civilization as a historical process (L.I. Novikova, Yu.K. Pletnikov). In the 1990–2000s, the question of the specifics of Russia as a civilization, its place in the world political and cultural space (A.S. Akhiezer, V.M. Mezhuev, A.S. Panarin, V.L. Tsymbursky) was particularly problematic. The present and the future of the civilization in the projection of philosophical insight sounds in the texts of B.A. Grushin, A.A. Zinoviev. The main results of the work of the staff of the Institute of Philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences on the problem of civilization is a comprehensive analysis of this concept at different levels (world, regional, local); designation of qualitative parameters, measurements of civilization; conclusions and forecasts about Russia as a civilization and its future.
